How to choose suitable filament-reinforced tape?

Filament tape

In the past, we used BOPP tape the most, but with the development of our science and technology, the fiberglass-reinforced tape also plays a vital role. So how to choose the appropriate filament-reinforced tape? This depends primarily on several factors, including the specific application, the weight and size of the packaged items, and environmental conditions. The following is to help you understand and choose the appropriate filament tape.

What is filament-reinforced tape?

It consists of a pressure-sensitive adhesive (usually we use synthetic rubber adhesive/acrylic adhesive.) coated onto a backing material, usually a polypropylene or polyester film, and fiberglass filaments embedded to add high tensile strength.

Types of filament-reinforced tape

Filament tapes include two types. It includes single-sided filament tape and double-sided filament tape. Single-sided filament tape has mono-directional filament tape and bi-directional filament tape. From the appearance, you can easily distinguish it. As the name suggests, mon-directional filament tape is composed of unidirectional fiber yarns and the bi-directional filament tape is made of cross fiber yarns.

Double-sided filament tape based on glass fiber as substrate and both sided coated with press-sensitive adhesive (usually is synthetic rubber adhesive), with excellent adhesion and good abrasion resistance.

Features of filament-reinforced tape

High Tensile Strength

The filament-reinforced tape includes glass yarn filaments. It has very high tensile strength. It provides excellent resistance to abrasion, moisture, scuffing, and breaks, even if nicked or punctured. Due to the high tensile strength, the filament-reinforced tape is ideal for a variety of strapping, reinforcing, strapping, and bundling applications.

Can use various material

The synthetic adhesive bonds well to a variety of surfaces commonly used in packaging, such as corrugated cardboard, fiberboard, plastic and metals. They can keep good adhesion even though in rough shipping and handling conditions.

Clean removal

Filament tape has residue or without residue. According to their applications, we can choose different types of tapes.

Applications

Bundling and reinforcing for boxes, stabilizing pallets or other heavy duty packaging;

Securing home-appliance components during transport and easy-open tear strips;

Bundling for piping, metal products, furniture, appliances, automotive parts, sporting goods etc;

Balance the cost of the filament tape with its performance and suitability for your application. While higher-quality tapes may be more expensive upfront, they can save you money in the long run by reducing the risk of package damage or failure.

Considering these factors, you can select a filament tape that meets your specific packaging needs in terms of strength, initial adhesive, adhesive, and environmental conditions. If you’re unsure, you can always consult us.
